Carpet

More than 75% of the flooring in the United States is made up of carpet. Carpet offers a number of benefits including: beauty, style, performance, and affordability for any budget. There is a wide array of carpet for you to select from, each bringing its own unique look to your home.

Carpet comes in 12’, 15’, and sometimes 13’-6” widths. All carpets will be seamed together, laying in the same direction. The size and layout of the home will determine where the seams will be placed.

Different stain protection levels and warranties are offered on carpet products. When selecting carpet for your home, please consider your personal home activity and traffic patterns, and understand what is covered by the warranty of the specific carpet that you have selected.

Carpet cushion (pad) is sold by quality specifications. Upgrading of your carpet cushion enhances the longevity and comfort of your carpet.

Carpet Construction

Most residential carpeting comes in two basic construction types: cut pile and loop pile.
• Cut pile carpets are made by cutting the yarn loops to create individual upstanding tips, which produce a luxurious look and feel.

• In the loop pile construction, the carpet loops are not cut or sheared, so loops form at the surface.

Carpet Characteristics

Fiber – Most carpets are made of yarns created from synthetic or man-made fibers which are engineered specifically to meet the demands of residential installations.

• Nylon – Is the oldest and most commonly used fiber due to its style, versatility, and overall performance characteristics. Nylon is durable and resilient. It is receptive to dyeing, which results in color versatility and clarity. However, nylon’s propensity for dyeing also allows it to stain easily unless treated with stain-resistant protection.

• Polyester – Offers exceptional softness and color clarity, but tends to flatten out more easily. It is naturally stain and fade resistant. Polyester carpets will perform well if appropriately constructed, and are usually less expensive than nylon in comparable weights.

Face Weight – Indicates the number of ounces of fiber in a square yard of carpet. All other things being equal, the higher the face weight of a carpet, the better.

Density – Indicates how tightly the carpet yarn is tufted into the carpet backing. Higher density affects the appearance of the carpet and may provide more comfort and luxury underfoot.

Twist – Indicates how tightly the yarn strands are twisted together in a one-inch length. A tight twist usually improves the durability of a carpet.

Understanding the Characteristics of Carpet & Pad

• Seams - Carpet seams will not be invisible. Various types of carpet will show seams differently. Texture, density, and color will all be a factor in how the seams will look. Lighter colored and looped carpets will show seams more than others. Lighting in the home may also contribute to the visibility of the seams.

• Color Variation - The carpeting you select may be slightly lighter or darker than the sample due to dye lot variation. This is similar to the slight variations in paint color from one batch to the next. Dye lot variation should be expected and is not considered a manufacturer's defect.

• Looped Carpets - With looped carpets there is a strong possibility that some loops will come loose. When this occurs, snip the loose yarn with scissors. Do not pull on the yarn, as it will unravel. This is a normal condition for this style of carpet.

• Stains - Although stain protection will help your carpet resist stains, no carpet is stain proof. There are recommended methods on how to remove different types of stains. Keep in mind these are only recommendations. Please refer to the care and maintenance section for this information.

• Stairs - As carpet bends over stairs and wraps around risers, the backing of the carpet may show depending on the texture and style of the carpet.

• Traffic - All carpets will develop wear patterns eventually, some more quickly than others. This is considered a normal characteristic of carpet.

• Cushion - Carpet cushion (pad) is sold by quality, not color. The color of your pad may be different from the sample. Color differences will not affect performance. Occasionally one can feel “hard” spots in the pad. This is normal and is not a manufacturing or material defect.

Two types of pad often used are rebond (recycled foam) and rubber. The rebond may have a softer feel but the rubber will out perform the rebond. With the current oil situation, the pad industry has been greatly impacted both in cost and availability.
